Health Testing

Why Do We Health Test?

Because it MATTERS! Many people don’t realize just how many genetic diseases and disorders Labradors can carry—or worse, be affected by. Right now, there are eighteen plus known genetic conditions that can impact Labradors, and we’re incredibly proud to say that all of our upcoming breeding dogs are clear of every single one.

What does this mean for you?

It means that every puppy we produce is 100% free from these genetic conditions—no carriers, no risks, no exceptions. When you choose a Reilly Lane Labrador, you’re not just getting a healthy puppy—you’re getting peace of mind. We stand behind our promise to eliminate these risks, and we can confidently guarantee it.

OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Testing Genetics are just one piece of the puzzle. At Reilly Lane Labradors, we go even further by ensuring the orthopedic health of our dogs. As soon as our breeding dogs turn two years old, we have their official scores for their hips and elbows evaluated through the OFA. We also preform Penn hip testing on all of our breeding dogs.
For hips, we aim for OFA passing scores of FAIR, GOOD, or EXCELLENT, while elbows are assessed as NORMAL you may see grades for levels of dysplasia (Grade 1: minimal, Grade 2: moderate, Grade 3: extreme). We will only breed NORMAL or grade 1 elbows if the grade is NOT bilateral. For Penn hips we only breed dogs with a score of .46 or lower. A lower number indicates a better score. The breed average for a Labrador is .45 currently.

Why is this important?

Studies show that hip and elbow dysplasia are only roughly 20% genetic and truly 80% environmental, but we take responsibility for that 20% to ensure it doesn’t come from our breeding dogs. By prioritizing these evaluations, we’re giving every puppy the best possible foundation for a lifetime of healthy movement and activity.

When it comes to health testing, we don’t cut corners—because the future of this incredible breed, and the happiness of your family, depends on it.
